Frontlit vs. Backlit Banner: Choosing the Right PVC Flex

Front-lit and back-lit flex look similar on a roll, but their optical construction is opposite. Here is how to match the media to the lighting condition of your installation.

The difference is optical, not just nominal

Frontlit banner is engineered to reflect light that falls on its printed face from the front — a billboard lit by external floodlights or by daylight. Its PVC coating is formulated for high opacity so the polyester scrim does not telegraph through, and the surface is tuned for maximum ink density under reflected light. Backlit flex does the opposite: it transmits light from behind the print, so the coating is translucent and the scrim is finer, allowing a lightbox to push even illumination through the colour layer.

Match the media to the lighting condition

If your installation is lit from the front — an outdoor billboard, building hoarding or street-side display — choose frontlit. If the graphic sits in a lightbox, a transit shelter or an airport panel that glows at night, choose backlit or coated backlit. Using frontlit in a lightbox produces a dim, blotchy panel; using backlit under front lighting wastes the translucency you paid for and can look washed out in direct sun.

When to step up to coated backlit

Coated backlit applies a finer, more uniform coating than standard backlit flex. The result is higher colour saturation, sharper edge definition and more even light distribution across large panels. For premium retail lightboxes, airport advertising and high-resolution backlit signage where the panel is viewed up close, the coated construction is worth the upgrade.

Weight and width still matter

Within each optical family, weight drives durability and wind handling. A 220 gsm frontlit is light and economical for short-term campaigns; a 320 gsm frontlit holds its flatness over a multi-year outdoor install. Most NCF banner series are available in roll widths up to 5.1 m, which lets you print a mega-format billboard with a single seamless sheet and no visible join.
